MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – Mobile’s minor league baseball team, the BayBears, will be staying in the Port City for at least two more seasons.
The ownership group of the BayBears, Ballcorps LLC, determined that it was in the best interest of the organization to remain in Mobile through the 2019 season.
The decision by Ballcorps LLC comes one day after the Madison City Council unanimously approved a lease, licensing, and management agreement with Ballcorps to build a new baseball stadium in the Huntsville area in North Alabama.
The city of Madison would need to borrow $46 million to build a multi-use baseball stadium. As a result, Ballcorps, LLC will sign a 30-year term lease.
“Bringing a double-A baseball team to this area is something that we, in turn, have as a possible destination spot and so we have continued to look at that as a Mayor and council, and see it as a documented economic driver,” said Madison Mayor Paul Finley.
Despite the agreement, the BayBears will remain at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile for two more seasons.
“Everyone affiliated with the BayBears organization looks forward to staging two more seasons of BayBears baseball in a fun, clean, and family-friendly environment at Hank Aaron Stadium,” said BayBears General Manager Chris Morgan in a press release.
