PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) –

A Pearl River County man was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train Monday morning as he walked on the railroad tracks.

Twenty-year-old Colton Wayne Hall was walking north when the northbound Amtrak hit him near the Jackson Landing Road crossing around 8:30 a.m, according to Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage Turnage.

Turnage noted that Hall was wearing earbuds and likely didn’t hear the train. “We believe he had earbuds in and the music really loud and probably didn’t realize the train was coming up behind him,” Turnage said.

It’s unclear why Hall was walking on the tracks, but Turnage explained “he had some vehicle problems today and had taken off work. It’s not clear where he was walking [to].”

Though it’s illegal to walk on the railroad tracks, Turnage said many people do so because the tracks provide easy access in the rural area.

The Amtrak train left New Orleans this morning and had just crossed into Mississippi when the accident occurred. Hall lived with his grandmother in the Nicholson Community, not far from where the accident happened.
